In a groundbreaking move for South Africa’s hospitality sector, Sibaya Casino & Entertainment Kingdom has unveiled a solar energy plant as large as four rugby fields, which will supply 60% of the complex’s electricity needs. The installation marks a significant step towards sustainable energy solutions within the country’s leisure and entertainment spaces.
The 2.5MW solar plant, comprising 4,590 solar panels, was constructed at a cost of R54 million — the largest green energy investment to date by hospitality group Sun International. Strategically positioned to cover 90% of Sibaya’s external parking area, the installation not only generates clean power but also provides shaded parking for visitors, merging functionality with environmental responsibility.
Ravin Sahadev, Maintenance Manager at Sibaya, explained that the initiative is part of the group’s proactive response to ongoing energy challenges. “The aim of the solar plant is to reduce our reliance on diesel to prevent emissions during times of loadshedding, and lower electricity consumption during normal periods,” he said. “By doing this, Sibaya not only saves money but also supports Sun International’s broader environmental strategy to manage energy efficiently and cost-effectively.”
The plant, which boasts a lifespan of approximately 25 years, was installed by LTM Energy Group and is expected to generate around 3.699 GWh of clean, renewable energy annually. This move is poised to set a new benchmark for commercial energy efficiency in the country’s hospitality industry.
Sibaya General Manager Virath Gobrie hailed the project as a reflection of the entertainment complex’s commitment to innovation and sustainability. “By reducing our carbon footprint and investing in renewable energy, we are reinforcing our commitment to sustainability and operational efficiency, while setting an example for the industry and contributing to a greener future for South Africa.”
As the country continues to navigate energy constraints and environmental concerns, Sibaya’s solar initiative stands as a powerful testament to how businesses can lead in sustainability while enhancing guest experience and operational resilience.
