Sun International has announced a significant leadership appointment as it continues to sharpen its focus on growth, innovation and scale. Following a comprehensive search, the group has appointed Mark Sergeant as Chief Operating Officer: Gaming, a role that places him at the helm of land based gaming revenue across the business.
Sergeant will assume his new position from February, reporting directly to Sun International CEO Ulrik Bengtsson. The appointment brings more than 25 years of senior leadership experience into the group, spanning gaming, leisure and hospitality, with a proven track record across large, complex operations.
Before joining Sun International, Sergeant served as Group Managing Director at Genting Casinos, where he oversaw an extensive portfolio of 35 casinos across the United Kingdom. His remit also included an international casino operation in Cairo, a UK integrated gaming and leisure resort, as well as two online gaming businesses. This breadth of experience positions him uniquely to contribute both operational depth and global perspective.
Bengtsson described the appointment as a strategic step forward in Sun International’s ambition to become a digitally led, market leading omnichannel gaming group of scale. “Mark brings all the right skills to drive our gaming operations forward, along with a fresh perspective on how we continue to build world class capabilities,” he said.
Beyond operational expertise, Sergeant is widely recognised for his people first leadership approach. Throughout his career, he has built high performing teams, developed future leaders and fostered service driven cultures that translate into strong customer experiences. He has also played a key role in advancing Responsible Gaming strategies, ensuring that growth is underpinned by the highest standards of compliance, integrity and customer care.
In his new role at Sun International, Sergeant is expected to play a pivotal role in introducing international insights that support sustainable growth and profitability across the group’s gaming portfolio. His depth of experience in driving casino performance, combined with a strong record in multi channel engagement across retail platforms, is set to unlock further value for the business.
Over the course of his career, Sergeant has successfully managed operations generating revenues in excess of R7 billion and leading workforces of more than 4,000 employees. His appointment signals Sun International’s continued commitment to strengthening leadership capability as it positions itself for the next phase of growth in an increasingly dynamic gaming landscape.
