Full Circle in the Cape: My First Solo Trip and a Return to Where It All Began

There’s something powerful about returning to a place that once tested you. I was just 19 when I faced one of my first major rejections in Cape Town being excluded from UCT. It was a deeply painful moment that shaped how I viewed myself and my future. At that age, you think you have everything figured out until life humbles you in ways you never imagined.

Since then, I’ve returned to the city a few times, but this trip feels different. This time, I’m going back alone on my first ever solocation, through Timeless Trends. It’s not just a trip—it’s a personal milestone. I’m going not only as a traveller but as a storyteller, a creative entrepreneur, and a woman who has learned to rise again and again.

I’ll be attending an event and exploring some beautiful corners of the Western Cape, including the winelands, and making space for slow, meaningful experiences that fill my cup. As I navigate the challenges of my life now building a business, seeking financial stability, and staying rooted in my calling this journey is both reflective and restorative.

One thing I’m especially excited about is experiencing the newly opened Marble Cape Town, a luxurious new addition to the V&A Waterfront that is already warming up the city’s winter season in the best way. On Sunday, 8 June, Marble launches Seven Colour Sunday, a vibrant celebration of South African culture in collaboration with Kfm 94.5.

If you grew up in South Africa, you probably know what a proper Sunday lunch looks like. “7 Colours” is more than a plate it’s a tradition. It’s the feeling of home, of laughter between bites, of music in the background and family gathered around a table. As a food lover who enjoys a good Sunday meal (and makes a pretty great one myself when I get the time), this launch is something I genuinely look forward to.

Marble is taking Sunday lunch to a whole new level with a colourful, themed series of lunches that celebrate togetherness and flavour. Each lunch will feature a sharing-style menu curated with a Marble touch from brisket and Yorkshire pudding to vegetarian phyllo twists, roasted vegetables, broccolini with chili crunch, and delicious desserts. Every Sunday will be themed with a specific colour and guests are encouraged to dress accordingly.

Here are the upcoming Seven Colour Sunday themes and dates:

8 June — Ruby
29 June — Tangerine
13 July — Honey
27 July — Sage
17 August — Azure
31 August — Violet

These events will include drinks on arrival, Marble’s famous focaccia with hummus and pumpkin butter, starters like shrimp flatbread or panko-fried avocado, and mains served with vibrant sides that reflect the rich hues and textures of a South African table.

Set against the backdrop of the Atlantic, with Kfm bringing the music and Marble delivering the magic, Seven Colour Sundays are a celebration of everything that makes this country so soulful food, people, music, and love.

For me, this solocation is about more than rest or discovery. It is about returning to the place where it once felt like everything fell apart and reclaiming it as a space of healing and joy. I am not the girl I was at 19. I’m returning as a woman who has tasted disappointment but also growth, purpose, and resilience.

Sometimes the best way to honour your story is to go back to where it all began and choose to experience it differently.
