Cape Town is pushing forward with its bid to host a Formula 1 race in South Africa for the first time in over three decades. The Cape Town Grand Prix South Africa (CTGPSA) is set to submit an official bid to the Bid Steering Committee, established by Sports Minister Gayton McKenzie. This bid represents the city’s ambition to secure the rights to one of the world’s most prestigious motorsport events.
As reported by BusinessTech, Cape Town has emerged as a strong contender to host the Formula 1 Grand Prix, with CTGPSA proposing a thrilling 5.7-kilometer street circuit around the Green Point Sport Tourism Precinct, located near the renowned DHL Stadium in Green Point.
Igshaan Amlay, CEO of CTGPSA, confirmed that the organisation’s presentation to the Bid Steering Committee will take place after January. The presentation process is expected to unfold in February or shortly thereafter, giving Cape Town the opportunity to showcase its potential as a Formula 1 destination.
Amlay highlighted the significant positive impact that hosting the Formula 1 race would have, not only on the local economy but on the city as a whole. The event is expected to attract thousands of international tourists, generate substantial media coverage, and create numerous jobs, boosting Cape Town’s tourism and business sectors.
For South Africa, securing a Formula 1 Grand Prix would mark the return of the iconic race to the country after the last race was held at Kyalami in 1993. If successful, the Cape Town Grand Prix could become a landmark event for both the city and the nation, positioning South Africa as a major player on the global sports stage.
The Cape Town Grand Prix bid is set to capture the attention of motorsport fans and city stakeholders as it moves through the formal presentation process in the coming months.
