Back Home, Back to Remos: A Taste of the Life I’m Creating

I was recently back home in Durban to celebrate a truly special occasion—my great-grandmother’s 95th birthday. It was a wholesome reminder of where I come from and how far I’ve come. But before heading back to the chaos of Johannesburg, I made sure to stop by a place that’s become something of a personal ritual: Remos at Flanders Mall.

Now, Durban has seen a lot of changes, but one thing that hasn’t shifted for me is this spot—Remos remains top 2, and honestly, it’s not number 2. If you’re looking for quiet luxury, this is it. The space is elegant yet relaxed, sophisticated but unpretentious. And the best part? It’s less than 10km from my family home in Phoenix.

I know what you’re thinking—how does one find quiet luxury in Phoenix? Well, technically, you don’t. Remos is nestled within Mount Edgecombe Estate, just across the street. It’s a whole different world. The kind of place where spotting Porsches, Ferraris, and Maseratis in the parking lot becomes normal.

Before I ever stepped into Flanders, I used to drive past and wonder, how do these people live like this? Meanwhile, I was dragging myself to a job I hated. Fast forward to giving Remos a try, and I never looked back. Even when I was the only black woman in the room, I didn’t feel out of place—I felt inspired. I didn’t ask what people did for a living, but I could tell: this was serious business. And in that moment, I made a decision—this is the life I want to create for myself. A life of comfort, beauty, and ease.

As for the food? It’s consistently out of this world. I’ve had almost everything on their menu—from gourmet pizzas and juicy burgers to tender steak. On this last visit, I discovered they also serve sushi at their in-house fish shop, and wow. Add to that their signature cocktails (I had to stop myself at two mimosas before missing my flight!) and the Sparrow Breakfast—perfectly poached eggs, bacon bits, and hollandaise sauce—and you have a food experience that feels like a warm hug with a designer bag.

What keeps me going back, though, isn’t just the menu. It’s the people. Ted, the manager, and his team make you feel seen and taken care of. The level of service is what sets Remos apart—it’s not just good, it’s intentional.

If you ever find yourself in Durban and want a spot that offers both comfort and class, Remos at Flanders Mall is it. Trust me—it’s a taste of the life I’m creating.
