No, I’m not being biased when I say KwaZulu-Natal has some of the best scenery in the country. From the towering Drakensberg mountains to the golden beaches of the Indian Ocean, it’s pure bliss. KZN is my home, and while I’ve explored parts of it, I know I’ve only just scratched the surface. Discovering more of it has become part of my personal homework, especially since starting Timeless Trends, which was born from a desire to tell travel stories that feel close to home.
In a world increasingly dominated by digital experiences, there is a magic in physical exploration that virtual reality simply can’t replicate. From the wind on your face as you drive along the coast, that first breathtaking view when you crest a mountain pass, to the moment you step into a hotel lobby and know you’ve found a special place, these are the experiences that remind us we live in a country of extraordinary beauty.
I believe every South African should experience the wonder of this country for themselves. That belief was reignited recently as I followed Sipho Alphi Mkhwanazi’s journey through KwaZulu-Natal on the second edition of the Sasol Mzansi Tour. Although I wasn’t on the tour myself, watching his content was a powerful reminder of what awaits when we decide to explore what’s right here at home.
There is something therapeutic about planning a road trip. The excitement builds as you trace your route, research your stops, and imagine the moments ahead. Yet in our rush to board flights and seek adventures abroad, we often overlook the treasures that lie just a few hours away.
KwaZulu-Natal is one of those treasures. The province offers an unmatched range of landscapes and experiences. The Drakensberg invites you into its serene embrace with misty trails, crisp mountain air, and skies full of stars. Then there’s Umhlanga, vibrant, modern, and luxurious, where the iconic lighthouse stands tall as the waves roll in. Sunset strolls along the promenade linger in your memory long after you’ve left.
Drive a little further north and Ballito offers something more intimate. Its boutique hotels and quiet beaches give you room to breathe. For those who like their coastal escapes with a touch of class, San Lameer is a gem combining ocean views with championship golf and a sense of calm you can’t fake.
Even as someone born in this province, I’m learning that travel within our borders is about more than places. It’s about presence. It’s about being fully in the moment, whether it’s striking up conversation with a stranger, getting a tip on a hidden gem, or proudly showing someone your favourite beach. These experiences root you. They remind you why you love where you come from.
So while I continue exploring KZN in my own time and in my own way, I’m grateful to people like Alphi who are spotlighting the beauty of our country with such passion. If you’re curious to see more from the Sasol Mzansi Tour 2.0, follow @alphi_sipho on social media and check out #SasolMzansiTour.
Let it inspire you the way it’s inspired me to dig deeper into your surroundings and to fall in love with your home all over again.
