The Vans Old Skool, introduced in 1977 as the Style 36, has transcended its origins as a skate shoe to become a symbol of rebellion, creativity, and cultural movements. It was the first Vans model to feature the iconic Sidestripeā¢, designed for individuals who move to their own beat, both on and off the board. From punk’s gritty dive bars to Warped Tour stages and hip-hop’s underground cyphers, the Old Skool has been embraced by artists, outcasts, and innovators who redefine the sound of their generation.
In 2025, Vans is elevating this legacy with the Premium Old Skool Music Collection, a series of three releases that remix iconic eras of music and skate history. This collection features a premium build with upgraded comfort, archival details, and the same raw attitude that made the Old Skool legendary.
First Drop: Punk and Hardcore Revival
The initial release pays homage to the energy of punk and hardcore, showcasing bold leopard prints and standout solids reminiscent of the ’70s and ’80s.
Second Drop: Vans Warped Tour Nostalgia
The second installment rewinds to the era of the Vans Warped Tour, capturing the rebellious spirit of Y2K with classic checkerboard patterns, two-tone colorways, and flame prints.
Third Drop: Underground Hip-Hop Tribute
The final release features vibrant colorways on gum soles, reflecting the period when underground hip-hop took the Old Skool to new places.
The Premium Old Skool Build enhances the classic silhouette with improved cushioning, a refined fit, and archival details. The updated design offers a more seamless feel and includes 30% biobased Sola Foam ADC insoles for all-day comfort. Glossy sidewalls, higher foxing tape, and throwback branding bring a ’90s-era edge, demonstrating that the Old Skool continues to evolve while staying true to its roots.
For this collection, Vans collaborated with musicians and Vans Skate Team athletes who embody the intersection of music and skate culture, including The Paranoyds and Nelly Morville, Voice of Baceprot and Basral Graito, Little Simz and Helena Long, as well as Hi-Tech and Etienne GagnĆ©. These individuals shape cultural narratives through their creative endeavors and exemplify the “Off The Wall” mindset with the Old Skool on their feet.
The Premium Old Skool Music Collection will be released monthly beginning February 13 at Vans retail locations and online at Vans.co.za.
