Finally, a day where carbs are purely food for the soul and calorie-free. Yes, sometimes, happiness does come in the form of… a waffle. Especially on 25 March – Waffle Day. Sweet or savoury, covered in choc chips, slathered in syrup or decorated with bananas and cream—everyone has a favourite way to wolf down a waffle.
Waffles were introduced to Sweden in the early 1600s. The day became official when the religious celebration Vårfrudagen, meaning “Our Lady’s Day,” was merged with the traditions of våffeldagen (“waffle day”)—because the names were so similar. Over time, the Swedes began calling it Waffle Day and celebrating by eating våfflor (waffles). Now, Waffle Day is celebrated in many Scandinavian countries and other parts of the world, including South Africa.
Even at tashas Constantia, where their very special Waffle House has stocked up on every topping available in the region in preparation for the big day.
