Travelers seeking an authentic South African experience need look no further than Lebo’s Backpackers in Soweto. Our recent intrepid adventure with Lebo’s offered a profound mix of cultural immersion, historical insights, and a glimpse into the township’s complex realities.
Learning from Lebo’s Legacy
Our journey began with a taste of Lebo’s remarkable story. We learned about the resilience behind his business, savoring a traditional potjie lunch paired with refreshing local drinks. This warm welcome set the stage for a day filled with discovery.
Camping with Community
Lebo’s dedication to the community was evident. We explored their campsite, a testament to their commitment to sustainable tourism, and witnessed firsthand the strong relationships they’ve built with local residents. This focus on responsible tourism ensures both cultural exchange and visitor safety.

Breaking Cultural Barriers
Next, came a truly unique culinary experience. Sharing a dish of “inhloko” (cow cheeks) with the co-founder of Intrepid, Darrell Wade defied traditional Zulu customs that once restricted this delicacy to men. It was a moment of cultural exchange and shared adventure, forging a lasting memory.

A Stark Contrast: Emzimhlophe Hostel
Our intrepid spirit then led us to a place of stark contrast – the Emzimhlophe hostel. Once a single-sex residence for mineworkers, it now houses a population of 40,000, including women and children. Witnessing the challenging living conditions served as a sobering reminder of the socio-economic struggles faced by some Soweto residents. The irony of vacant RDP homes nearby, deemed unaffordable by the community due to government-imposed rental fees, added another layer to this complex issue.
A Feast for the Senses and the Soul
The day culminated in a delightful final spread. From succulent biltong (dried meat) to fluffy amagwinya (deep-fried dough), the array of local delicacies satisfied our appetites. The lively interaction with the Intrepid team and fellow guests further enriched the experience, solidifying the sense of community fostered by Lebo’s Backpackers.
Lebo’s Passion: A Beacon of Hope
Throughout our journey, the passion of Lebo’s staff shone through. Their dedication to showcasing Soweto’s rich tapestry and fostering understanding between locals and visitors is truly inspiring. This Intrepid tour wasn’t just a sightseeing adventure; it was a chance to connect with a vibrant community and its resilient spirit.
