The streets of Soweto shimmered with vibrant fashion, stylish hair, and international flair at the recent Sta-Sof-Fro Soweto Fashion Week. The event, filled with dazzling designs, captivating cocktails, and a global audience, solidified Soweto’s position as a creative powerhouse.
Hair and Fashion: A Powerful Fusion
Sta-Sof-Fro, the event’s headline sponsor, reinforced the undeniable connection between fashion and hair as personal expression tools. Pearle Peane, Brand Manager at Sta-Sof-Fro, emphasized this link: “One cannot separate fashion and hair in the process of individual expression. We’ve been thrilled to participate at this level.”
Award-winning hairstylist Saadique Ryklief, along with other talented stylists, brought unique and innovative concepts to the forefront, contributing to the week’s theme of “uncharted creativity.”
International Designers Make Their Mark
Russian design houses IMK and LI LAB stole the show with their dark and captivating collections. LI LAB’s collection, described as “the birth of a new era of beauty,” drew inspiration from mythical creatures, inviting viewers into a world of mesmerizing aesthetics.
“We sought to create a collection that invites individuals to immerse themselves in a world of captivating aesthetics in pursuit of true femininity and identity,” explained LI LAB. Their collection featured classic color palettes and fitted silhouettes that accentuated femininity with unexpected details. Think lingerie-inspired dresses with corset accents and seductive minis adorned with Renaissance-inspired beadwork and dramatic trains.
A Platform for Emerging and Established Talent
Maria Kurdyumova, designer for IMK, expressed her delight at showcasing her collection in South Africa for the first time. “The show was awesome, the audience reacted actively to what we created,” she said. “The models were incredible and gorgeous. I’m delighted and thankful for the opportunity provided.”
Kurdyumova’s collection, inspired by black, Gothic style, and a touch of brutality, showcased key pieces from previous collections alongside new designs adapted for the runway.

Stephen Manzini, CEO of Soweto Fashion Week, emphasized the event’s theme of “uncharted creativity” while expressing his excitement for the future of South African designers and the fashion industry as a whole.
The week also featured established South African design houses like Boys of Soweto, Musawenkosi, DOPE store, and FDB Human Store, solidifying the event’s commitment to showcasing both local and international talent.
