South Africa has a brand new sport to celebrate – the African Biathlon. Unveiled today by the Nedbank Running Club, the country’s largest running movement, this initiative is set to revolutionize the running culture by infusing it with excitement and local flavor.
Traditionally, Biathlon is an Olympic sport that combines cross-country skiing and rifle shooting—activities that don’t quite align with South Africa’s sunny climate. In response, the African Biathlon has been reimagined to embrace the spirit of Mzansi, creating an engaging and accessible experience for all.
A Unique Take on Biathlon
The African Biathlon consists of two parts:
- A 5km run, welcoming runners of all skill levels.
- A post-run activity, designed to inspire participation and enhance the experience. These activities could range from enjoying coffee with friends, exploring local art, wine-tasting, or even hitting the dance floor. The best part? Participants get to choose what suits their vibe, ensuring each African Biathlon reflects their unique passions.
Research shows that 77% of local runners wish they had more running communities in their areas. The African Biathlon addresses this by combining fitness with social connection, creating a platform for shared passions and friendships.
Edward Mothibi, Comrades Marathon champion and member of the Nedbank Running Club, expressed his enthusiasm, stating, “We’ve set out to create a new kind of running movement. The African Biathlon isn’t just about fitness—it’s a cultural celebration. It’s about running, connecting, and having fun together.”
When and Where
The African Biathlon will officially launch in Johannesburg, running from February to March 2025, with support from leading community running crews such as:
- Benchwarmers Running Club
- Social Running Club
- Vault Running Club
These partnerships ensure a strong community-driven approach, bringing people together in welcoming environments.
Shaped by the Community
A key element of the African Biathlon is its interactive approach, allowing participants to help shape the sport. Runners will have the opportunity to vote for their favorite post-run activities, making this movement a true reflection of South Africa’s creativity, diversity, and vibrant culture.
Khensani Nobanda, Nedbank Group Executive for Marketing and Corporate Affairs, highlights the brand’s vision: “Nedbank is committed to helping our customers save time while banking, allowing them to spend their time on things that matter most, with the people that matter most. The African Biathlon is more than a fitness initiative; it’s a celebration of community and culture. For those starting the year with fitness goals, this is a fresh and exciting way to stay motivated while having fun.”
