This past weekend, Johannesburg was TURNT UP like never before, as the inaugural Red Bull Turn It Up contest took the city by storm. A groundbreaking competition that perfectly blended talent, innovation, and pure excitement, this event was an absolute showcase of what happens when the best in the game come together.
From the moment the music started, the crowd knew they were in for something special. The atmosphere was electric, with every DJ performance pushing the boundaries of what was possible. The audience’s energy was contagious, urging the DJs to deliver stellar sets that kept everyone on their feet. It wasn’t just a competition — it was a celebration of sound, rhythm, and unity.
Leading the charge were the dynamic duo of DJ PH and Mac Shawty, who made their mark as part of the Blue Team. Their collaboration was pure magic. With seamless transitions, high-energy beats, and a perfect mix of crowd-pleasing tracks, they had the entire crowd singing along and dancing in unison.
“Being on stage was exciting and terrifying at the same time because we had to think on our feet,” said Mac Shawty after their victory. “You never know what to expect from the opposition team. The crowd was amazing, and the energy was electrifying. Shout out to everyone involved, including the runner-ups. Dope sets all in all and a huge shout out to Red Bull for a different yet challenging competition man! I think we all needed that.”
For Mac Shawty, this competition was especially sweet. “It was my first-ever DJ competition and to have won it against such great DJs is an absolute joy and surreal feeling. I really needed a win in my life and this one really hit home,” he added.
DJ PH echoed the sentiment, highlighting the unique nature of the competition. “The entire concept of the show was dope! It was fun being on stage, interpreting our understanding of the themes through music whilst pleasing the crowd and competing with the opposite teams. The pressure of the clock and outdoing your competition really made for an interactive night for everyone who was there. Shout out to Red Bull and the team!”
