Qatar Airways, the only five-star global airline based in the Middle East, has marked its busiest festive season ever in South Africa, coinciding with its 20th anniversary of service to the country. Between 22 December 2024 and 6 January 2025, the airline transported 84,000 passengers to and from Africa—nearly doubling its figures from the same period in 2019-2020 before the COVID-19 pandemic.
A Milestone Achievement
Qatar Airways Chief Commercial Officer, Mr. Thierry Antinori, commented:
“This landmark achievement demonstrates Qatar Airways’ commitment to increasing connectivity across Africa, as well as the rising demand for our award-winning travel experience.
“For this milestone to come at a time when we are also marking our 20th year of flying to South Africa makes it even more special. For two decades now, we have endeavoured to build a strong, lasting relationship with South Africa… and remain dedicated to contributing to its exciting growth ahead, including through our partnership and investment with Airlink.”
Celebrating 20 Years of Service
To mark its 20th anniversary, Qatar Airways is offering up to 20% discounts on flights from South Africa to over 170 destinations via Hamad International Airport, the only five-star airport in the Middle East. This promotion runs from 15-22 January 2025.
The airline currently operates up to 33 weekly flights to Johannesburg, Cape Town, and Durban, showcasing its strong commitment to connecting South Africa to the world. Since launching routes to Johannesburg and Cape Town on 16 January 2005, Qatar Airways has seen a significant increase in demand, with flights now operating at 90% capacity, up from 60-75% in 2019.
A Champion of South Africa
Qatar Airways has shown its dedication to South Africa in various ways:
- Business Investment: The airline has partnered with Airlink, boosting regional connectivity and economic opportunities.
- Showcasing Talent: It has recruited young chefs from Capsicum Culinary Studio and incorporated traditional South African dishes like biltong beef soup, lamb potjie, and bunny chow into its onboard menu.
- Wildlife Conservation: Through Qatar Airways Cargo, the airline facilitates South African exports while also assisting in the global repatriation of animals for wildlife conservation efforts.
