There’s something comforting about writing from my home office, wrapped in my new Hush Puppies slippers with a mug of coffee nearby. I didn’t wear them this morning at the launch. It was too early and too cold to think straight. But they’re on now, and I’m fully embracing the spirit of Slipper Day.
Earlier today, I attended the official media launch of Slipper Day 2025. Despite the Joburg chill, the mood was warm, the energy uplifting, and the message clear. This campaign is about more than just slippers. It’s about showing up for children with life-threatening illnesses, children who spend more time in hospitals than playgrounds, children who still dare to dream.
Organised by the Reach For A Dream Foundation, Slipper Day takes place on 30 May, and it’s your chance to join a national movement. All it takes is a R20 sticker and your favourite pair of slippers. The proceeds help make dreams come true for kids battling serious conditions like cancer and organ failure. Dreams that bring hope, joy, and a break from the reality of medical treatments.
Reach For A Dream has been doing this for over 36 years, fulfilling wishes big and small. Whether it’s meeting a hero, going on a first flight, or receiving a long-hoped-for gift, these moments aren’t just memorable. They’re transformative.
At the launch, CEO Julia Sotirianakos summed it up beautifully:
“Something as simple as buying a Slipper Day sticker and wearing slippers becomes a powerful symbol of hope, comfort, and the belief that every child deserves to dream.”
And honestly, she’s right. This campaign proves that even the smallest actions, like trading your shoes for slippers, can create a ripple effect of comfort and support.
Here’s how to take part:
- Grab your R20 sticker at Wimpy, Dischem, Pick n Pay, Toys R Us, Baby City, Hush Puppies, Krispy Kreme, and The Crazy Store
- Or shop online via the Reach For A Dream website for stickers, themed socks, and slippers
- Corporates and schools can order in bulk with delivery powered by The Courier Guy
- On 30 May, wear your slippers and sticker to any Wimpy and get a free Famous Coffee or hot chocolate for the kids
This year, I’ll be supporting Slipper Day. Slippers on, coffee in hand, doing it for the dreamers. Because every sticker sold, every slipper worn, helps light up a child’s life.
And honestly, that’s a dream worth getting behind.
