Chasing Greener Pastures: An African Creative’s Dream of a Life of Ease and Luxury

By Nokuthula Khwela:

Travel has a way of changing your perspective, pushing you to dream bigger and aim higher. My recent trip to the UAE was more than just a luxury experience; it was a powerful reminder of the kind of life I deserve as an African artist—one of comfort, success, and ease. As creatives in Africa, we often face the harsh reality of having to take on office jobs to survive while our passion remains a side hustle. But this trip showed me that I deserve more—much more.

Flying in Style with Emirates

Flying business class with Emirates was my first real taste of luxury travel, and it surpassed all expectations. From the moment I stepped on board, I was greeted with champagne, gourmet meals, and top-tier service that made me feel like I was exactly where I belonged. I knew Emirates would deliver, but experiencing it firsthand was a whole new level of comfort.

The 8-hour flight from Johannesburg to Dubai was my first long-haul trip, and I had no idea how I’d handle the length. But to my surprise, I managed to sleep for five solid hours—high above the clouds, 30,000 feet up. It was like the universe was telling me this was only the beginning, and I was exactly where I needed to be.

Abu Dhabi: Luxury Meets Culture

Arriving in Abu Dhabi was like stepping into a world where luxury and culture coexist effortlessly. Staying at Le Méridien Abu Dhabi, I woke up each day to calm surroundings and quiet elegance. The hotel embodied the kind of life I envision for myself—one where comfort is not a luxury, but a lifestyle.

Dining at Nuri, Hilton Abu Dhabi, was an experience in itself. The food was world-class, and the service was flawless—further proof that this city is built for excellence.

Driving past landmarks like Warner Bros World and the water theme park was a reminder of the innovative spirit that drives the UAE, and of the kind of world I want to immerse myself in—one where creativity is celebrated, and opportunities are endless.

Cultural Landmarks: A Glimpse of Timeless Grandeur

The UAE’s cultural landmarks offered a fascinating glimpse into its rich history. Qasr Al Watan, the Presidential Palace, was a true architectural marvel. The attention to detail, the opulence—it made me realize how far-reaching art and design can go when given the resources and vision to flourish.

Visiting the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque was a moment of reflection. Its sheer beauty and grandeur spoke to the power of tradition, culture, and craftsmanship, reminding me of the importance of honoring one’s heritage while striving for the future.

Exploring the Heritage Place gave me deeper insight into the rich history of the UAE and how that shapes the country today. It also encouraged me to think about how my own artistic journey can contribute to the broader global narrative.

Dubai: A Vision of Possibility

As I drove past Dubai’s iconic landmarks like the Burj Khalifa, I couldn’t help but be struck by the city’s ability to merge modernity and tradition so effortlessly. Dubai’s skyline is a symbol of ambition—of what’s possible when creativity, vision, and hard work come together.

This wasn’t just a trip; it was a reminder of what I’m capable of and what I deserve. A comfortable life, where my work is celebrated, where I am recognized for my craft, and where success feels within reach.

Pursuing the Life I Deserve

For me, this trip to the UAE wasn’t just about enjoying luxury—it was about reaffirming my belief that a life of ease, comfort, and success is not just for the lucky few. As an African artist, I’ve had to face the reality that my creative work often has to take a backseat to survival. But my experience in the UAE showed me that I don’t have to settle. I can—and will—create a life where my art is my livelihood, where comfort and success are part of the equation, not the exception.

This trip was a taste of the greener pastures I’ve been chasing, and it reaffirmed that I am worthy of a life where my creativity is valued, my work is celebrated, and I can enjoy the luxury of living a life that feels easy.
