Africa’s Travel Indaba is one of the biggest travel showcases on the continent and I’ve had the privilege of being part of it. Last year, I was hosted as media by South African Tourism and also joined as a panelist. This year, although I couldn’t be there in person, my sister is on the ground in my absence capturing the experience.
I recently collaborated with Gauteng Tourism in March and enjoyed a jam-packed itinerary filled with sports and wellness activities. I even played paddle for the first time. I absolutely love their current focus on sports and wellness tourism, and it’s exciting to see that vision carried through to this year’s Indaba.
From May 13 to 15, 2025, at the Inkosi Albert Luthuli International Convention Centre in Durban, Gauteng Tourism Authority is leading a strong presence with dedicated themes like #SportingGP and #MusicalGP. These will showcase the province’s world-class sporting, wellness and music tourism offerings from iconic teams and stadiums to music festivals, boxing arenas and cultural landmarks like the Kaizer Chiefs Naturena Base and the SA Sports Hall of Fame.
Following a weekend of major sporting victories from the Nedbank Cup Finals to Bafana Bafana’s CHAN qualification, Gauteng is riding a high and seizing the opportunity to push toward pre-pandemic tourism growth. The calendar is packed with beloved events like the Soweto Marathon, Delicious International Food and Music Festival, NBA Africa Games, Joy of Jazz and so much more.
Africa’s Travel Indaba attracts over 9,000 participants from 26 countries and generates over $121 million in direct tourism revenue. For Gauteng, this is a chance to amplify its golden status and solidify its place as a top destination for lifestyle tourism.
