On Saturday, 8 February 2025, the Soweto Theatre will come alive with the celebration of South Africa’s rich musical legacy as renowned guitarist, composer, and cultural visionary Billy Monama presents the fourth edition of his critically acclaimed concert series, Back to the Future: The 30 Years of SA Democracy.
Supported by the National Arts Council, this one-night-only event transcends music—it is a powerful journey through three decades of democracy, narrated through the universal language of rhythm and melody. Blending South Africa’s historical sounds with Monama’s 28-year artistic journey, the concert promises an evening of reflection, unity, and hope.
A Cultural Masterpiece
With its unique fusion of music, storytelling, and artistic expression, Back to the Future has established itself as one of South Africa’s most anticipated cultural events. Curated and directed by Monama, this year’s edition holds special significance, marking 30 years since the dawn of democracy in the country.
The concert will be structured into eight compelling segments, each reflecting a key aspect of South Africa’s evolving identity. These include:
Genesis – exploring the roots of South African music
Black Consciousness – showcasing music’s role in the liberation movement
Tribute to the Masters – honoring legendary South African musicians
Tribute to South African Women – celebrating the women who have shaped the nation’s soundscape
The lineup boasts stellar performances by Moneoa, celebrated for her soulful melodies, and the captivating Zama Jobe, alongside Billy Monama himself. Together, they will deliver a genre-defying experience spanning jazz, kwaito, Afrosoul, and Afro-jazz.
A Masterclass for Aspiring Musicians
Beyond the concert, a masterclass will take place on 17 February 2025 at AMPD Studios in Newtown, Johannesburg. This session, tailored for aspiring musicians, educators, and cultural practitioners, will provide invaluable mentorship and insights from industry leaders.
