There is a distinct, undeniable magic unfolding across Johannesburg’s urban core. Following the resounding success of its April debut which drew over 5,000 visitors into the inner city and fresh off the energy of the 702 Jozi My Jozi Walk the Talk, Main Street Sundays is officially returning on Sunday, 9 August.
Timed perfectly to coincide with National Women’s Day, this edition invites Joburgers to slow down, step out, and honor the mothers, daughters, sisters, and creative spirits who shape the city. For one vibrant Sunday, Marshalltown will transform from a bustling financial district into a pedestrianized, car-free sanctuary for culture, wellness, and human connection.
The Curated Inner-City Playground
Stretching along Main Street from the quiet elegance of 44 Main all the way to Gandhi Square, the day offers a slow, sensory exploration of the city—free from the rush of traffic and closed vehicle windows. Whether you choose to wander, cycle, roller-skate, or simply take in the atmosphere with a coffee in hand, the street is designated entirely for pedestrians.
Here is how to experience the best of Main Street Sundays:
1. Zen & Wellness at 44 Main
Begin your morning under the tree-dappled canopy outside 44 Main. Framed by soothing fountains, this dedicated wellness zone offers a peaceful urban reset. Expect outdoor yoga sessions, silent book clubs, and urban sketchers capturing the architectural heritage of the precinct.
2. A Walkable Art Mile
For lovers of fine art and culture, Main Street becomes an open-air gallery route. Take in the Homecoming Exhibition at the landmark Standard Bank Gallery, then make your way to Loveday Street for an exclusive rooftop pop-up exhibition hosted by Asisebenze Gallery atop the Aegis Building.
3. Vintage, Vinyl & Artisanal Design
At Gandhi Square, the tempo lifts with a bustling Vintage & Vinyl Market featuring rare records, vintage fashion, and live acoustic performances. Nearby, the Creative Makers’ Market will showcase unique handcrafted designs, local textiles, and original art from South Africa’s finest indie creators.
4. Inner-City Culinary Delights
From gourmet food trucks lining the boulevard to the surrounding brick-and-mortar eateries and alfresco dining spaces at Gandhi Square, the culinary lineup promises an eclectic taste of Jozi’s rich food culture.
5. Active Mobility & Family Play
Dedicated lanes will open exclusively for skaters, cyclists, and strollers. For families, Play Africa Children’s Museum will host an interactive kids’ zone featuring creative play installations, a mock courtroom, and dedicated toddler areas.
Restoring Jozi’s Soul Through Movement & Community
“Main Street Sundays is about restoring Jozi’s soul,” shares Dawn Robertson, Visitor and Creative Economy Catalyst at Jozi My Jozi. “When we close the streets to cars and open them to the community—to families, artists, cyclists, and vendors—we remind people that this city is theirs. It’s a day to meet Jozi at a chilled, walking pace, celebrating human connection.”
Echoing this vision for urban renewal, Roland Postma, Managing Director of Young Urbanists, notes:
“If we want Jozi to work, we must start with its streets. Because once you change the street, you change the city.”
To ensure an effortless, relaxed experience, the event is fully supported by dedicated marshals, volunteers, emergency services, and the Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD).
