Zambia has taken a significant step toward enhancing its tourism sector by implementing visa-free entry for nationals of 53 additional countries. This policy, effective since January 1st, has expanded the country’s visa-exempt nations to an impressive total of 167. This move builds on the success of a 2022 initiative that removed visa restrictions for major tourism markets, positioning Zambia as a progressive leader in Southern African tourism.
The new visa waiver policy has been met with praise from industry leaders, who have hailed it as a forward-thinking strategy to encourage greater international tourism. By making it easier for visitors to enter the country, Zambia aims to boost tourism numbers, create new economic opportunities, and further develop its vibrant tourism industry.
In response to the expected surge in visitor arrivals, Zambia plans to establish new immigration control points across the country. This expansion of infrastructure will ensure that increased traveler flows can be managed efficiently, preserving both security and ease of access.
The decision to waive visas also aligns with the African Union’s vision for greater mobility across the continent and supports the goals of the African Continental Free Trade Area, which seeks to increase trade and movement among African nations.
In addition to the visa changes, the Zambian government is strengthening border security to support the increased flow of international visitors. This includes the implementation of an advanced passenger information system and the deployment of over 900 additional immigration staff to ensure smooth and secure entry for all travelers.
