2025 is shaping up to be a year of many firsts for me, from solo adventures in Cape Town to a heartfelt family vacation in the vibrant heart of South Africa: Sun City.
The journey began with my sisters’ drive from Durban. When I met them at Haarties, their tired eyes told stories of long roads and delays. But I’ve learned over time that delays often lead to some of life’s most precious moments, and this was no exception.
As we cruised into Sun City, the sun was just dipping, painting the sky in soft hues. Arriving just in time for check-in, I stepped into a world that was both familiar and new. I had visited Sun City before, but this was my first stay at the newly refurbished The Reserve unit at Sun Vacation Club. From the moment we were welcomed by warm smiles and calming African luxury, I knew we were in for something special. The staff truly took great care of us, making our arrival effortless and warm.
Our spacious eight-sleeper unit was a masterpiece of elegant design, perfectly blending nature’s beauty with modern comfort. The walls told stories through art, majestic animals, serene landscapes, all in rich, earthy tones that instantly grounded you. As the eldest sister, I naturally claimed the master bedroom with its luxurious en-suite bathroom, complete with both a tub and shower, a haven for relaxation after our travels. The other two bedrooms were cozy and bright, sharing a bathroom just as well appointed.

The generous lounge area was perfect for family time, with a sleeper couch ideal for the kids and a smart TV unit that became the heart of our evenings. We filled the space with music and laughter, turning quiet nights into vibrant celebrations of sisterhood. The kitchen was fully equipped, from plentiful utensils (enough for our whole crew and more) to modern conveniences like a toaster, dishwasher, and kettle, everything needed for seamless self-catering.
We arrived armed with a feast, and two dining areas awaited us: an intimate indoor table for cozy meals and an alfresco spot next to the braai area, perfect for sizzling evenings under the stars.
After unpacking, hunger led me to prepare a delicious late lunch. With soulful tunes playing softly in the background and refreshing drinks in hand, we soaked in the moment. For me, travel is about connection, especially soulful connection, and this trip was exactly what my spirit craved. Laughter, games, and even tears filled the night as we shared memories, still healing from the recent loss of our grandmother. This was our sacred sister time, a chance to breathe, let go, and celebrate life.
The next morning dawned bright and clear. We reflected over breakfast before heading to the iconic Valley of Waves. The waterpark was everything we hoped for: exhilarating slides, gentle waves, and a playful atmosphere that reminded us how to be kids again. Winter in Sun City was surprisingly mild, the perfect backdrop for outdoor fun without the usual crowds.

That evening, we indulged in a classic South African braai back at the unit, the smoky aroma mingling with the fresh air, a feast of grilled delights and heartfelt conversation.
Our final day took a regal turn with breakfast at The Palace of the Lost City. Walking into the grand buffet, it felt like stepping into a dream. Champagne flowed endlessly, oysters sparkled on ice, sushi, steak, waffles, every craving satisfied with flawless flair. The impeccable staff made us feel like royalty, and my sisters’ radiant smiles said it all.
Before the vacation came to a close, we challenged each other to a round of putt-putt, light-hearted competition that had us laughing until our sides hurt.
As we packed to leave, that bittersweet feeling settled in. Our time together had flown by, but the memories we created, rich in love, laughter, and soulful connection, would linger far beyond the journey.
If you’re searching for a getaway that blends African luxury, family bonding, and endless experiences, The Reserve unit at Sun Vacation Club is where your heart will find a home.
