I come from a family where my great-grandmother was a first wife, and from her lived experience, I personally do not recommend the path of polygamy. While some celebrate it as a cultural choice, the reality is that when parents pass on, this dynamic often leaves families divided, with long-lasting rifts that affect generations. Growing up in KwaZulu-Natal, I’ve seen how polygamy remains part of our heritage, and in recent years it has even gained renewed popularity among young women, partly fuelled by the visibility of reality shows like Uthando Nesthembu. That said, to each their own, every family navigates its own truths within culture and tradition.
This layered reality is now finding its way onto primetime drama. It’s wedding bells and celebrity cameos on Scandal! as reality TV royalty Musa Mseleku, who has become one of the most recognised faces of polygamy in South Africa, makes an appearance in the much-anticipated wedding of the year: Nhloso and Dintle’s nuptials, airing Thursday, 29 August on e.tv.
Dintle and Nhloso are tying the knot, but not without turbulence. Their union comes without the blessing of Nhloso’s first wife, a decision that has ignited tension and turmoil within his family. The lobola process was riddled with resistance from Nhloso’s elders, who continue to question his decision to take Dintle as a second wife. As if that weren’t enough, Nhloso also discovers troubling truths about Dintle’s past marriages, further straining an already fragile situation. Yet despite the odds, the couple remain determined to exchange vows in a wedding that is both culturally rooted and deeply personal.
“Featuring Musa Mseleku on this wedding episode marks a significant cultural crossover,” says Sanele Zulu, Series Producer of Scandal!. “His presence embodies themes of tradition, influence, and community, which are intricately woven into the narratives of Dintle and Nhloso, enhancing the depth and relevance of their storyline.”
The ceremony itself is elevated with fine details, including a show-stopping wedding cake by renowned Chef Nzuza. His structural design, intricate decorations, and carefully balanced flavours turned the cake into a centrepiece of both artistry and taste, an element that amplified the sensory experience of the celebration.
For those of us who have witnessed the complexities of polygamous families first-hand, Scandal!’s wedding storyline feels deeply familiar. It holds up a mirror to the tensions and cultural negotiations that many South African families face, while simultaneously blending tradition with the magic of television.
Don’t miss the wedding event of the year and Musa Mseleku’s guest appearance on Scandal! airing Thursday, 29 August at 7:30 PM on e.tv.
