For the first time ever, MSC Magnifica will sail to ports in South Africa and Namibia during her 2025 World Cruise – bringing global flair, local flavour, and a boost to regional tourism.
MSC Cruises has announced that MSC Magnifica will make her maiden calls in Gqeberha (14 April) and Cape Town (16 April), followed by a first-ever stop in Walvis Bay, Namibia (18 April). This marks a major milestone in MSC Cruises’ relationship with Southern Africa as part of the ship’s 2025 World Cruise.
To commemorate these inaugural calls, MSC Cruises South Africa will host a series of onboard events including traditional crest exchange ceremonies, a symbolic maritime tradition that fosters goodwill between the ship, local port authorities, and the communities they serve.
“MSC Magnifica’s stops in Africa highlight MSC Cruises’ growing confidence in the region’s ability to accommodate and support its ships,” said Ross Volk, Managing Director of MSC Cruises South Africa. “With 3,000 international visitors on board, MSC Magnifica will provide a significant boost to local tourism, bringing valuable economic benefits to communities through onshore spending.”
Reuben Riffel Returns On Board
A standout highlight of this African leg is the return of South African celebrity chef Reuben Riffel, who will be sailing from Gqeberha to Cape Town. Guests will be treated to a specially curated menu rich in Cape-inspired flavours, marking his second appearance as guest chef for MSC Cruises following his popular debut aboard MSC Poesia in 2024.
“To be back again this year is amazing,” said Riffel. “We’ll be serving seafood starters, spicy Cape-style mains like lamb with gorgonzola polenta, and ending with the much-loved South African classic – malva pudding.”
Riffel is widely known as a MasterChef South Africa judge and the founder of acclaimed restaurants such as Reuben’s Franschhoek and Reuben’s at The Robertson Small Hotel.
