As Johannesburg transitions from the amber glow of autumn into the crisp, calm embrace of winter, the city’s social calendar finds its new heartbeat in the gardens of Sandton. Following a highly successful debut on 25 April, The Maslow has announced the extension of its most exclusive dining offering: Plated: A Chef’s Table. Originally a limited series, the experience will now run as a monthly edition through to November, allowing guests to witness the landscape shift from winter frost to spring blossoms.
An Intimate Garden Sanctuary
Set against the lush, manicured backdrop of Lacuna Bistro’s natural gardens, “Plated” is a masterclass in unhurried luxury. This is not just a meal; it is a curated afternoon where the boundaries between the kitchen and the table dissolve. Guided by Executive Sous Chef Thokozane Shongwe, an intimate group of just 30 guests is treated to a front-row seat of culinary craftsmanship.
“Our chefs will guide you through a sensory experience where every sip and bite tell a story of craftsmanship, seasonality, and refined taste,” says Chef Shongwe.
The Menu: A Narrative of Seasonality
The introductory menu is a sophisticated journey through South African flavours, meticulously paired with fine wines and artisanal beverages to create a harmonious balance on the palate.
- To Begin: A delicate Ostrich Carpaccio served with a parmesan wafer and the bright kick of spicy apricot chutney.
- The Garden Course: A Prawn Niçoise salad featuring lemon and garlic prawns, charred green beans, and confit baby potatoes, finished with a maple mustard dressing.
- The Warmth of Winter: A honey-mustard glazed Confit Chicken Leg resting on a homemade bean cassoulet, followed by a palate-cleansing Pineapple and Basil sorbet.
- The Main Selection: Guests choose between a Filet Mignon with potato pavé and sweetcorn purée, or a pan-seared Sea Bass with soft polenta and salsa verde.
- The Sweet Finale: A whimsical Popcorn Crème Brûlée, balanced by the tartness of frozen raspberries and mixed berry gel.
Refined yet Grounded
What sets “Plated” apart is the atmosphere. There is a specific magic in Sandton’s long afternoons where the midday sun lingers over a beautifully staged table. Every detail from the first amuse-bouche to the final spoon of dessert is thoughtfully considered to ensure the experience feels indulgent yet refreshing, luxurious yet deeply grounded in nature.
Whether you are seeking a tranquil escape from the boardroom or a sophisticated Saturday afternoon, Plated: A Chef’s Table offers a rare opportunity to savour the best of South African hospitality in the heart of the city’s greenest oasis.
