Tucked away in the heart of Rosebank is a space so beautifully designed, so soulfully executed, that you forget you’re in Johannesburg at all. Once known as The Winston, this historic landmark has been reimagined as the Park Hyatt Johannesburg and with it comes a new standard in quiet luxury: Room 32.
This is not your usual restaurant experience. It is layered, sensory and steeped in intention. From the moment you enter, you’re drawn into an environment that doesn’t rush or overwhelm. At the poolside, subtle soundscaping enhances the atmosphere. Birdsong and ambient textures create a feeling of natural serenity, perfectly complementing the design’s warm stone and clean lines. It is a space that makes you slow down and fully arrive.
Room 32 is the heartbeat of the hotel and its only communal space. With just 31 rooms, Park Hyatt Johannesburg is now the most intimate Park Hyatt in the world and Room 32 delivers a dining experience that matches that intimacy with elegance.
At a recent chef’s table experience, we saw firsthand how Executive Chef Karel Jacobs turns food into storytelling. His approach is ingredient-led, fire-forward and deeply connected to South African land and memory. Every dish reflects a respect for provenance and a curiosity for technique, from flame-charred vegetables to perfectly cooked heritage grains with bold, umami-rich reductions.

“True luxury begins at the source,” says Jacobs. “We work with farmers and artisans who understand the land, the season and the soul of South African ingredients.”
From 3 August, Room 32 and The Terrace introduce a new ritual: a Sunday Family-Style Brunch served weekly from 12:00 to 16:00. Co-led by Jacobs and Pastry Chef Chrizelle Venter, the brunch offers South African-inspired dishes in a laid-back yet elevated setting. Live background music fills the space, and the energy feels easy, elegant and considered, the kind of Sunday you want to stretch out and savour.
“Room 32 was born from a desire to create a space that feels both grounded and elevated,” says General Manager Mitch Gemmell. “In a hotel defined by privacy and discretion, this is our invitation to indulge in the city’s finest and classiest cuisine.”
Director of Food and Beverage Debi van Flymen brings global finesse to the wine and beverage programme. Her pairings, drawn from South Africa’s finest wines and craft spirits, are as thoughtful as the dishes themselves. Even the non-alcoholic offerings are sophisticated, layered and beautifully presented.
Room 32 is not a place you stumble into. It is a space you choose with intention. A reflection of Johannesburg’s evolving luxury and lifestyle scene, rooted in heritage, shaped by design and told through flavour.
This isn’t just dining. It is a memory in the making.
