Our weekend in the Vaal, hosted by Gauteng Tourism, was a perfect blend of history, adventure, and relaxation. We explored the rich past of South Africa while experiencing some of the best activities the region has to offer. The journey began with a powerful reflection on the Sharpeville Massacre, an event that left an indelible mark on our nation’s history.
Honouring History: Walking in Freedom in Sharpeville
We started our weekend with a 6am walk in Sharpeville, a place many of us had never visited before. It was a deeply moving experience, walking the same streets where, on March 21, 1960, South Africans stood up against the apartheid regime. Many paid the ultimate price for their defiance. Today, we walk in freedom thanks to their sacrifices, and it’s important that we honour them, not only in remembrance but through action.
During the walk, we had the rare privilege of meeting survivors of the massacre as they were rushing somewhere, and it was a humbling moment to greet them. Afterward, we enjoyed a kasi lunch of shisanyama, just a short distance from where we walked. The food was flavourful and hearty, giving us a true taste of Sharpeville’s vibrant culture.
Later, the energy continued at a block party in Sharpeville, featuring live musical performances that brought the streets alive with rhythm and joy. It was a great way to celebrate the spirit of resilience and community while connecting with the area’s cultural heart.
Game Drive at Emerald Resort
The following day, we set off for a game drive at Emerald Resort, where we spotted zebras, springboks, wildebeest, and waterbuck. The resort is a great place for wildlife enthusiasts, and if you want more than just a game drive, Emerald Resort offers plenty of other activities, such as:
- Padel: A fun sport for all ages.
- Putt-putt: Perfect for families to enjoy together.
- Rock climbing: A great way to challenge yourself (some of my colleagues even attempted it, which was hilarious to watch!).
- Aqua Dome: An ideal spot for kids to enjoy water activities.
The game drive was just one of many exciting ways to experience nature, and there’s no shortage of adventure to keep everyone entertained. For more information, visit the Emerald Resort website: www.emeraldresort.co.za

Adventure at Action Sport Vaal
For those seeking some competitive fun, Action Sport Vaal offers a variety of activities, including cricket, netball, and even a bar for those who want to relax while enjoying the games.
