Melville is a neighborhood long defined by its singular, bohemian character, but stepping across the threshold of Love Books feels like a discovery entirely its own. At first glance, it evokes the quiet, romantic charm of an independent corner bookshop tucked away down a cobblestone side street in Bologna, Italy—a rare sanctuary where time immediately slows down and literature takes center stage.
On Thursday evening, that sanctuary transformed into a vibrant yet intimate gathering space for Johannesburg’s creative community. Swapping the rush of the city for a room bathed in warm light, guests gathered around rich coffee, inventive coffee cocktails, and an assemblage of writers, thinkers, and storytellers. It was a masterclass in the art of lingering—a living reminder that when you add a room full of stories, exceptional coffee, and kindred spirits, your phone can easily wait.
A Meeting of Art, Literature, and Coffee
The occasion celebrated the launch of Douwe Egberts’ Limited-Edition Deco Jars, a collection that bridges physical craftsmanship and digital storytelling. Featuring four distinctive, South African-inspired designs across the brand’s 200g Pure Instant Jar range, these collectible glass vessels offer far more than an attractive addition to a kitchen shelf.
Each design is born from an original short story written by one of four acclaimed South African authors, accessible instantly via a QR code on the label. Whether opting for an immersive audio recording or the written piece itself, coffee lovers are invited to discover the narrative behind the artwork while carving out a quiet moment for themselves. Spanning reflective prose, humor, and imaginative takes on local life, the four stories capture the texture of everyday experiences—from a hadada interrupting a peaceful morning to a casual chat over a garden wall that spirals into an hour-long conversation.
Inside the Creative Process
Building on Douwe Egberts’ ongoing commitment to championing local creative talent—which previously featured visual artists in 2024—this year’s evolution places the written voices of authors at the very heart of the collection.
At Love Books, writers Zibu Sithole, Zama Mkhize, and Jarred Thompson, alongside multidisciplinary designer Louise Hoffmann, brought the creative process into the room. Through a lively panel discussion, they unpacked South African culture, the fluidity of inspiration, and the rituals that keep creativity flowing. (Though unable to attend in person, Paige Nick also shared a special video message with the room).
Hoffmann, whose work spans art, design, illustration, and writing, successfully translated the spirit of local storytelling into visual designs that give each jar a distinct and compelling personality.
As Mbulelo Mashilo, Brand Manager at Douwe Egberts South Africa, reflected during the evening:
“South Africans are wonderful storytellers, often without realising it. We can turn a five-minute coffee break into a full account of what happened at work, who said what, and what really happened afterwards! And sometimes, all it takes is a cup of coffee and a moment to pause for that story to emerge.”
The Art of the Pause
Douwe Egberts’ glass jars have long been kept and collected, remaining staples in homes long after the coffee inside is finished. With this new collection, those jars gain a deeper layer of meaning, turning an ordinary morning routine into an invitation to pause, listen, and connect.
As Mashilo aptly reminded guests: “A moment of pause is not time wasted; it’s a reward. Coffee gives us a reason to stop for a while. We hope these stories, in every sip, make that moment even more enjoyable.”
The invitation now extends well beyond the launch night. Make a coffee, pick up a Deco Jar, scan the label, and settle in for a good story. Because a coffee break doesn’t always have to be a rush—sometimes, it can simply be a chapter to yourself.
