Contra.Joburg Returns: Rediscovering the City Through an Unconventional Art Weekend

29–30 August 2026 | Theme: Different Is Good

Forget the sterile, white-cube environment of standard art fairs. On 29 and 30 August 2026, Contra.Joburg returns for its fifth edition, transforming Johannesburg into an expansive, living canvas. Spanning 16 creative spaces and featuring over 170 artists—with Rosebank newly joining the route this year—the festival invites art lovers and culture seekers to experience the city through the very studios, heritage spaces, and creative hubs that fuel its pulse.

Saturday: Energy, Architecture, and Spectacle

The weekend opens with high-octane city energy and live expression. Start at the historic Rand Club to experience Thabo Pie’s live performance RDP (Redevelopment & Deconstruction Programme) and contemporary African photography on the fourth floor, followed by an intimate showcase from Joburg Ballet at 14:30. Later, head to Jozi Gold Brewing Company for a craft tasting with the master brewer before taking in a live evening set by acclaimed bassist and composer Herbie Tsoaeli at 18:30. Along the Saturday loop, visitors can hop between Bag Factory Artists’ Studios, Asisebenze Art Gallery, The Bus Factory, and Transwerke to print custom resistance posters and interact directly with artists.

Sunday: Open Studios and Immersive Artistry

Sunday offers a closer look at the creative process. Step into working environments at Ellis House, Oovookoo, Living Artists Emporium, and the studio of renowned artist Usha Seejarim. At Victoria Yards, visitors can participate in BodyWeaving—an interactive artwork made with movement and thread—or enjoy August House’s family-friendly workshops, live sets by DJ Jupiter King, and the Different Is Good Market. For collectors, 74 curated artworks will be on auction under Collect Contra in partnership with Stephan Welz & Co., complemented by luxury USM modular furniture, custom framing, and artisanal chocolates at 223 Jan Smuts in Rosebank.

“Different is good because Johannesburg itself is different,” says Contra.Joburg founder Sara Hallatt. “There is no single way to experience the city, and there shouldn’t be a single way to experience its art. Contra.Joburg is about meeting artists where they work, while discovering parts of the city you might not otherwise encounter.”
