Young Voices, Bold Futures: How Joburg Film Festival Is Shaping the Next Generation of Creators

The Joburg Film Festival (JFF) returns for its eighth edition in partnership with MultiChoice, a CANAL+ company, with a powerful commitment to the future of South African cinema. At the heart of this vision is the Young Voices Programme, a creative platform designed to elevate emerging filmmakers through education, access and opportunity.

More than just a programme, Young Voices is a movement. It exists to equip the next generation of storytellers with the tools, confidence and industry connections they need to build sustainable careers in film and digital media.

This year’s theme, Frames of the Future, speaks directly to young creatives between the ages of 18 and 35 who are ready to tell stories that shape culture and shift perspectives. The programme offers a carefully curated mix of workshops, a film competition and JBX Youth talks that bring learning, collaboration and inspiration into one dynamic space.

Building the storytellers of tomorrow

The Young Voices Programme blends practical and theoretical training through exclusive screenings, director masterclasses, seminars, mentorship opportunities, skills development sessions and networking events. Participants gain hands-on experience and real-world insight into South Africa’s evolving film industry.

“The Young Voices Programme is about empowering young creatives with the confidence, skills and access they need to find their place in the film industry,” says Fanney Tsimong, Young Voices Programme Manager. “By creating a platform that connects emerging filmmakers with industry professionals, real-world training opportunities and meaningful exposure, we are opening doors that might otherwise remain closed. Our goal is to ensure that young people are not only inspired by cinema but are also equipped to actively participate in shaping its future.”

The Young Voices Competition

Aspiring filmmakers are invited to bring their vision to life through the Young Voices Competition. Participants can submit five-minute films created on any device, as long as they align with the Frames of the Future theme.

Entries close on 13 February 2026, and winners will receive entry into the JFF Film Society, bursaries, exciting prizes and a trophy. It is an opportunity to turn creativity into recognition and exposure.

Two days of creative mastery

The programme officially kicks off with the Young Voices Workshop on 7 and 8 February 2026 at Joburg Theatre. Featuring professionals who have worked on acclaimed productions such as Shaka iLembe, Queen Modjadji, Muvhango and Beauty and the Beast, the workshops focus on skills development and industry transformation.
